Amateur Radio |
A lot has changed in ham radio. In 2007, the
FCC changed the rules for amateur radio licensing. The
new licensee classes were reduced to three: Technician,
General and Extra. The Morse code proficiency
requirements have been dropped. For a small fee you can
take one to all three exams in one sitting. Depending on
your license class, you may operate or experiment on
frequencies from MHz to hundreds of GHz. There are many
digital data, voice, remote control and photograph and file
transfer transmission modes. Stations can consist of a
handheld transceiver, a base station with visible or hidden
antennas or a remotely operated station which may also be
connected via the internet. Communication may be via line of
site, atmospheric "skip", satellite (also shuttle and space
station), or moon bounce. Many operators communicate
worldwide with less than 5W of power, but others operate with
power up to 1500W. After transmitting in some modes, you
can check your worldwide reception for free via monitors
connected to the internet. Low cost equipment is
available at swap meets "ham fests" or through commercial
stores. Here are some links with more information:
