Patents |
| CEPD congratulates our VP,
Chris Crosby, as inventor on the recently granted US
patent, number 7,668,044,
Data Offload and Charging Systems and Methods. CEPD
has participated in the development and
helped several of our customers
obtain patents. Once our work is paid for, our
customers retain all rights to the inventions that they have
hired us to implement. We always appreciate being
recognized as co-inventors, when we help design a patentable
device or method. If you have an invention, consider utilizing
our expertise to help you get it patented.
More Patent Information
A patent is a set of exclusive
rights granted by a national government to an inventor or
their assignee for a limited period of time in exchange for a
public disclosure of an invention. There are three basic types
of patents: provisional, design, and non-provisional (utility)
patents. It is possible for an invention to have both a design
and utility patent. A provisional
patent allows the use of "Patent pending", is
less expensive, and is not examined on its merits, but cannot
be used for design inventions. It will become abandoned 12
months from its filing date, but that year does not count
towards the 20 year term of a utility patent. A
design patent protects only the
appearance of an article, not structural or functional
features. It has a term of 14 years from grant, and no fees
are necessary to maintain it in force. The drawing should
clearly depict the appearance, since the drawing defines the
scope of patent protection. The specification is short and
ordinarily follows a set form. A utility
patent is the patent type that most people are
familiar with. It protects the way an article is used and
works, and is valid for 20 years. A maintenance fee is due at
3.5, 7.5 and 11.5 years after the original grant, with a 6
month grace period. Failure to pay the maintenance fee will
result in the patent no longer being in force.
